Are You Paying Thrice or More for Wastewater Contaminants?

We all understand that minimising losses from production to the trade waste treatment system is always our first step in lowering our tradewaste contaminant bill. But it is often not realised that common wastewater contaminants in most industrial wastewater discharges, being FOG’s (fats, oils and grease), suspended solids and organic compounds are often charged for three or more times.

Wastewater Contaminents

We all understand that minimising losses from production to the trade waste treatment system is always our first step in lowering our tradewaste contaminant bill.

But it is often not realised that common wastewater contaminants in most industrial wastewater discharges, being FOG’s (fats, oils and grease), suspended solids and organic compounds are often charged for three or more times.

Each of these common wastewater contaminants can be stand-alone or they can be a subset of each other. For instance, one single contaminant might exhibit a result in all three tradewaste contaminant tests – that is, the single contaminant measures as a FOG, a suspended solid and an organic compound.

This means that if you are discharging to a tradewaste system that monitors and charges for these contaminants, you are paying for the some contaminants three times over!

If your trade waste charges are significant, you could potentially ask your water authority for dispensation, however the response is not likely to be favourable as all sorts of precedents will be being set. Alternatively, you could consider a higher level of wastewater treatment. Removing FOG and Suspended solids – which in turn usually reduces the BOD to some degree, is often a relatively straightforward exercise which can be achieved as simply as having a wastewater specialist company like Hydroflux review your process or absence of. Often simple upgrades or changes to the chemical program applied can provide significant trade waste costs reductions.
